What is a chesty cough?

When having a cold, often people suffer from a cough which can either be chesty or dry. A chesty cough means you are expelling mucus/phelgm. A dry cough is described as a persistent cough or tickling cough. To choose the best cough remedy it is important to know which of the different types of cough you are suffering from.

What is a chesty cough?

A chesty cough is also known as a wet or productive cough and is the result of having too much thick mucus in your airways that is difficult to cough up. Bisolvon Chesty and Chesty Forte helps to thin, loosen and clear mucus from the chest making it easier to cough up.

What are the symptoms of a chesty, wet cough with phlegm?

The following cough symptoms are typical for a chesty cough with phlegm:

  • Sticky mucus that comes up during persistent coughing
  • A rattling sound especially when breathing in and coughing
  • Chest feels congested may find it difficult to breath
  • Cough is often worse in the morning

A chesty cough associated with a cold can last between 1 up to 3 weeks.

The described symptoms are different to the symptoms of dry cough e.g. a permanent stimulus and urge to cough and/or irritation/tickling in the throat. Due to the different types of cough, it is important to choose the right remedy to treat your individual cough the best way possible.

What causes a chesty cough?

Chesty or wet cough can be the result of an infection of the upper respiratory airways associated with common cold viruses. This infection causes the mucus membranes of the airways to become inflamed and to produce thick, sticky mucus. We usually experience this as excessive mucus in the lungs and airways, which cannot be removed by normal mucociliary clearance. Then, coughing is part of the self-healing process of the body to get this mucus out. This can be supported with medication.
